In search of a better sounding tuner. ...

It is truly a difficult challenge to design and to manufacture a cost effective tuner .... one that is capable of such high definition AM stereo reception and full, rich wideband sound without encountering trade-offs (usable station sensitivity decreases by increasing the audio bandwidth response).

We accepted this challenge and, after expending great effort, and hundreds of hours in research and development, have succeeded in the introduction of this AMX-2000 component quality reference tuner. Analog AM stereo tuners are so extremely rare today, that many that are offered for sale at premium prices via auction sources are approximately 20 years old.

Audio reproduction is faithful to the on-air program source material in this precise, high-end AMX-2000 adaptation. Due to the absence of microprocessor, synthesizer, display driver, keypad, microcontroller, and other such "noise producing" components, this tuner's noise floor is not further degraded. This improves the usable sensitivity of the AMX-2000 tuner, and also eliminates the familiar "synthesizer noise" background sounds, birdies, whistles, and other spurious carriers that are so common-place on many garden variety digitally-tuned AM radios.

A high performance Motorola MC13028 "original McCoy" third generation AM stereo decoder chip is used for this AMX-2000 tuner (this device contains 679 active transistors). Advantages include true C-QuAM decryption, with a built-in signal quality detector that analyzes stereo pilot tone, received signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio, and adjacent / co-channel interference before switching to stereo mode. A "blend function" has been added to improve the transition from monaural to stereo reception, as well as to blend back to mono when 'platform motion' or co-channel interference occurs during skywave listening periods. Also included is precision digital countdown pilot tone detector, full-wave balanced envelope audio detection, synchronous detector, phase lock loop PLL (with divide by eight for master oscillator to reduce phase noise), and many other advanced features.

Not all AM stereo tuners are created equal. For many years, very high quality AM studios and transmitters were operating, but due to the mediocre and lackluster performance of available consumer AM receivers and tuners, many listeners perceived analog AM fidelity to be of inherently poor quality. Many radio manufacturers neglected any further improvements to the AM sections within their radios, intentionally reducing the audio bandwidth in their product offerings, to decrease interference from closely spaced AM stations. Another reason for the super narrow audio frequency response was to eliminate high frequency noise caused by the disregard for any R.F amplifier stage. Dropping this R.F amplifier stage contributed to further cost savings in the product. This super restricted audio bandwidth caused "muddy" music to be reproduced. Not only did AM circuitry in these radios stop advancing, but in most instances, manufacturers actually downgraded the AM sections of their radios for the sake of further cost savings. This was due to lack of public demand and general apathy for higher quality AM sound reproduction. So consumers today are left with few choices for wideband audio sound reproduction on the AM dial.

Also, not all tuners will receive AM stereo broadcasts. A special Motorola C-QuAM™ decoder integrated circuit chip is required. You may truly believe that you already own an AM stereo tuner. It is very unlikely that you do have this feature in your home. If you are within range of one of the AM stereo stations listed on this Stations page, then tune your radio to this AM station and see if the "stereo" indicator is illuminated. If you do not see the stereo indicator lit, then likely your radio or tuner does not have the ability to receive AM stereo broadcasts. This AMX-2000 tuner can solve that dilemma for you.

Ideally, humans can hear from 20 Hertz to 20,000 Hertz. Audio bandwidth of typical AM radios hardly tops 3,000 Hertz -- with audio fidelity that is typical of a telephone line connection -- ideal for news, talk, and sports program formats, however not for critically listening to high quality music. Many receiver manufacturers intentionally cut corners and design their consumer products to reduce this analog audio bandwidth. This restricted audio bandwidth causes "muddy" music to be reproduced. It is an inexpensive way to decrease interference from closely spaced AM stations, and to reduce the noise created, due to the lack of tuned R.F amplifier stage. It is not the medium, it is these lackluster radio designs that are to blame for this muddy AM sound. We have not forgotten that AM can be a high fidelity medium. We have built that understanding into the AMX-2000 tuner. Inferior design principles are not used, so audio reproduction is faithful and transparent to the source material! We welcome the NRSC to test our receiver side-by-side with any other currently available AM receiver and tuner; the proof is in listening to our product, and hearing the differences!

The purpose of the AMAX standard is to restore quality and uniformity to the AM band. AMAX also makes it possible for the consumer to receive high quality and consistent AM stereo sound from their local stations, when tuning across the standard medium wave AM broadcast band. This should not sound muddy.

Unlike conventional AM tuners, this AMX-2000 tuner is optimized for music, and reproduces many limitations of the air interface and AM station's transmitter. This increased fidelity and crisp reproduction of the transmitted source program material may now be fully enjoyed and appreciated by the audiophile expert. For the first time in radio history, AM fidelity is not strictly limited by the receiving equipment.

Due to our design in the manufacturing cycle, this AMX-2000 tuner's R.F (radio frequency) front end and the superheterodyne I.F (intermediate frequency) amplifiers are precisely aligned manually by hand, which guarantees that all specifications are met. Modern internal components were individually selected to meet high standards, and to provide the highest stability, longest life, and mean time between failures. There is one coupling capacitor per channel used in the entire audio path, so low frequency response is exceptional. This electrolytic aluminum capacitor is necessary to block D.C. voltages to/from the tuner. And to prevent an overload of the front end that may be caused by strong local AM stations, three keyed automatic gain control (AGC) stages were added in the tuned R.F antenna circuit, R.F amplifier, and I.F stages. This AGC is a closed loop feedback system, that uses the detected audio to generate a D.C control voltage, to automatically adjust the gain of the R.F and I.F stages. This design also maintains consistent volume across AM stations, regardless of received signal strength. Many AM receivers do not have any R.F amplifier stages, suffering poor sensitivity as a result, and inconsistent volume from local and distant AM stations.

What is in the box?

Your purchase includes one meduci AMX-2000 component tuner, one power pack adapter, one packing slip, operating instructions sheet, and electrical schematic diagram sheet.

Front panel includes manual variable tuning control and bright red LED stereo indicator. Unit measures 5" width x 4" depth x 3" height, and weighs less than two pounds (includes footpads).

Rear panel includes individual left and right RCA "phono-style" audio output jacks, AM external antenna input RCA jack, and D.C +12-volt power input. All AMX-2000 tuners sold since 2005 are backwards compatible for 12-volt D.C input (reverse polarity protection, as well)!

We can place any station identity, call sign, or any other promotional information on the front panel of this AMX-2000 tuner free of charge with your camera-ready art work in bit map (BMP), J-PEG (JPG), or comparable image format (there are size restrictions, due to available space on the front panel). If artwork is not submitted at time of order, the "AMAX Stereo" logo will appear on front panel as default selection.

Purchaser will supply their own AM antenna. An external indoor tunable loop antenna or random short wire antenna can be used. Remember that the radio's performance is only as good as the antenna system attached to it! Be careful which antenna you connect to your AMX-2000 tuner. An outdoor long-wire "beverage" style AM receive aerial antenna will likely overload the front end section, and destroy the input transformer, if lightning strikes. This tuner is best suited for an external indoor loop antenna (such as Audiovox AM Advantage or Select-A-Tenna model 541-M).

Also, the left and right line level audio outputs are ready for connection to user-supplied stereo amplifier, stereo receiver, or self-powered amplified speakers. For international sales, we supply one power pack adapter, that has 100-volt to 240-volt A.C input rating and +12-volt D.C output.

    This second generation meduci AMX-2000 tuner offers "hand made" precision in America with excellent quality control, and was designed entirely using a personal computer. Where else can you purchase a low-cost product with these attributes? By comparison, many hand-held portable stereo radios do not provide any AM stereo indicator, do not correctly decode the QuAM carrier (their design was a compromise ideally suited for the Magnavox PMX system), do not faithfully reproduce single-channel audio to the source material (especially low frequency bass notes), do not have wide audio bandwidth, and do not use a precision low phase-noise local oscillator to improve the stereo subchannel signal-to-noise ratio.     Given that this is a manually-tuned receiver, the tuning is more critical than its digital-tuned brethren. When you are first fine tuning the AM stereo station, you may hear a "squeal" sound until the carrier is properly tuned to the center of the station's frequency. Then the red front panel AM stereo indicator should illuminate.

    Also, since this a phase-detecting receiver, with a very low modulated 25 Hz stereo pilot tone used, the tuner needs to rest on a stable mounting surface. The air dielectric variable tuning capacitor and connection wires to this capacitor contribute to this requirement.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Section

    Q: In this "new world" of 24-hour AM IBOC, how much of the IBOC hash will this unit let through?

    A: This AMX-2000 receiver will not attenuate nor colorize the sound when tuned to HD radio AM stations. You will hear the increased noise floor, restricted audio bandwidth, and less audio demodulation in all of its splendor and glory. Also, as you tune to either side of the HD station, the hissing sound will become very loud.

    Q: Does the AM stereo decoder have a "mono" pin (for DX purposes in periods of heavy co-channel)?

    A: Our first three tuners did in fact include front panel toggle switch to enable "forced monaural" mode. We dropped this switch feature, as the new Motorola IC stereo decoder automatically blends the audio to monaural in cases of significant co-channel and/or adjacent channel interference.

    Q: Out of the box, are the design trade-offs for fidelity dramatic enough to not allow it to have a DX setting for people that want to pull in long-range C-QuAM stations? (like me -- none left within groundwave range). All of the stations that are far out of town by me are too poor to go IBOC, so skywave is my only option for stereo.

    A: Audio fidelity is very good with the AMX-2000 tuner. A large part of the research and design process was to ensure that selectivity would not be severely degraded by extending the audio bandwidth. There is ample selectivity to resolve stations spaced 40kHz apart on the dial. Users have reported receiving distant AM stations with a local station only separated by 20kHz. Much will depend on the antenna that is used. Obviously, if you live near a 50kW flame-thrower, it will be more difficult to receive adjacent stations at night. This is the case with any AM radio.

    Q: Your AMX-2000 sounds like an incredible achievement in terms of "quality of sound" however, little mention is made regarding its use for AM DXing purposes. Can you please let me know if I would be pleased with the DX capability of your receiver, or is the design more suited to sound quality and the stereo circuitry.

    A: Our meduci AMX-2000 is a high fidelity AM stereo receiver, though also can be used for nightly reception of distant (skip zone DX) AM stations. We have successfully tested many different external loop indoor antennas to increase the tuner's selectivity, and to receive many distant AM stations (both day and night).

    Q: I saw your AM Stereo radio on the Internet and it looks like a well designed unit. I am wondering if you will ever decide to produce an IBOC unit, since all the stations in this area have turned off their stereo encoders in favor of IBOC. I believe your receiver will be a good RF section for an IBOC receiver.

    A: There are at least two chips developed by Texas Instruments (TI) for decoding the iBiquity HD Radio bit stream. When we contacted Texas Instruments about purchasing engineering samples of their chipsets, TI said that we first needed to obtain a manufacturing license from iBiquity. When subsequently contacting iBiquity, we were notified that a $25,000 up-front payment was required to license their proprietary HD Radio technology; we also would need to make royalty payments to iBiquity for each tuner sale. Given the very small profit margin, we would have to sell many, many AMX-2000 tuners to be able to afford the up-front manufacturing license and other costs.

    Q: I'm trying to find an wide band AM tuner that will work in Australia on mono AM stations, specifically in the 522 to 1008 kHz range? Does your tuner do this? If so do you have an agent in Australia? If not, do you sell direct?

    A: Each AMX-2000 is available for direct shipment to Australia at $35 (U.S Dollars) postage for insured Global Express Mail (EMS) courier service. There is five business day transit time from U.S shipping date. There may be additional delay to leave foreign Customs unit. Our tuner indeed makes monaural AM stations sound better than many other radios can reproduce.

    Q: Would it be possible to include a headphone amplifier in the tuner?

    A: It was determined that the existing design cannot facilitate a headphone connection, without also using a headphone amplifier, and headphone with its own volume controls. Suitable adapters (individual left and right RCA connectors to stereo 1/8" jack) would also be required.

    Q: Rather than the analogue frequency display, what about a LCD digital frequency readout?

    A: Digital displays and support components would appreciably raise the unit cost of our meduci AMX-2000 tuner, and contribute to increased noise floor levels. It is true that digital display drivers, synthesizers, microprocessors, keypads, encoders, and microcontrollers inside typical garden variety tuners are not terribly quiet for the AM medium-wave broadcast band. Our AMX-2000 tuner is 100 percent analog, and does not use any of these digital components. However, we are developing an economical low-noise analog / pseudo-digital solution that will include digital frequency readout.

    Q: You do not say on your website whether the AMX-2000 is available with 9kHz station spacing compatible with Australian standards, or whether it is available as a 240 volt/50Hz model. Perhaps you could advise on this.

    A: Each AMX-2000 world tuner is designed for 9kHz or 10kHz station spacing. Our design is fully compatible with the Australian medium wave AM broadcast channel plan, as well as the station separation used in east Asia, south Pacific, and other regions within the world. Tuners manufactured since June 30, 2008 now include Energy-Star compliant power pack adapter.

    Q: Do you produce/market an AM tuner with exceptional reception for mobile (car/truck/RV) applications? Ideally the unit would be able to provide a signal out that can be patched to a head unit/receiver.

    A: Unfortunately, we do not have an automotive product at this time. In order not to have vehicle emissions control interfering with reception, an outdoor AM antenna would be required. We are considering such a product, though cannot be offered at this time.

    Q: What antenna cable do you suggest to connect to the Select-A-Tenna hardwire model, which uses a mini plug?

    A: You will need an RCA male to 1/8" (3.5mm) male two-wire cable. From C. Crane: "The Hardwire Select-A-Tenna will work with your receiver's RCA input. When ordering the Antenna you will also need to order a special patch cord. You need to order a 1/8 Mono Plug x RCA, product code (ANT AM PATCH). This patch cord is available for an additional $5.95.     Q: If I am reading the specifications correctly, this meduci AMX-2000 tuner does not have IBOC capabilities. Does this unit come with some sort of ferrite loop?

    A: This tuner uses an internal antenna input transformer (not a ferrite antenna loopstick), ready for connection to user-supplied external loop antenna. Many different antennas have been successfully used, from a random length piece of wire, to the Terk AM Advantage 1000, and Select-A-Tenna external devices.

    Q: Can you get notch filters for 9kHz to attach to the output?

    A: Notch filters are not included in the AMX-2000 tuner, and not terribly necessary. This reduces end user costs. An external multi-band audio graphic equalizer will reduce or eliminate any whistle sounds.

    Q: How do I pay (other than PayPal)?

    A: Accepted form of payment is either PayPal (verified user), U.S Postal money order, Western Union, or bank certified cashier cheque. Neither personal check nor cash will be accepted as payment. Please include return mailing address where to ship tuner.

    Q: I went over your specifications for the tuner, and I find that the LA1247 (Sanyo AM Electronic Tuner) you "currently" use for your tuner is a discontinued product. ... I found that the most similar product I could find, the LA1267 (Sanyo FM/AM Tuner of Electronic Tuning Type), comes with FM capability. Have you ever considered putting the LA1267 into your tuner and maybe giving it FM capabilities?

    A: Yes, we have considered the LA1265, LA1266, LA1267, LA1832, LA1833, LA1836, LA1837, LA1851, TA2003, TA2040, TA2049, TA8127, TA8132, and many other FM / AM tuner combination chips. Unfortunately, the LA1267 and other chips considered do not have double balanced type differential mixer stage. As a result, one would casually hear the heterodynes mixing in the presence of three or more local 50kW AM stations. Our adaptation using the LA1247 significantly reduces these mixing products. Also, the LA1247 was especially designed to be used as the front end chip for receiving AM stereo broadcasts. It employs a low phase noise local oscillator circuit. By comparison, the LA1267 does NOT have this special stable oscillator circuit to improve subchannel signal-to-noise ratio. Our experience indicates that FM / AM tuner combination chips sacrifice performance for the sake of convenience. Also, many designs run the detected monaural AM audio through the FM stereo decoder circuitry! We will offer an AM stereo / FM stereo tuner at a later date.

    Q: Is the MC13027/MC13122 chip combo for the AMAX standard used in your product?

    A: Motorola's MC13122/MC13027 combination chipset was not used in this second generation tuner. These chips are in short supply, are no longer being manufactured, and consequently the purchase price is high. One requirement is that MC13122 needs a digitally-tuned front end for successful AM stereo lock. In our humble opinion, the MC13122's stereo blend function is very aggressive in the presence of very minimal co-channel interference.

    Q: Does the AMX-2000 have the RF noise blanking and audio sample/hold features as depicted in the Motorola datasheets? (I live in a very noisy environment for AM, due to a low-performing rural electric utility!)

    A: In an attempt to control manufacturing and end-user costs, this AMX-2000 tuner does not have any RF noise blanking, and does not use such sample/hold features. In designing the AMX-2000 tuner, we reviewed nearly 400 different designs, and tested several different IC chips, and combinations of such chips. Our current design reflects the best possible low cost solution, that also does not adversely affect overall tuner performance.

    Q: You state that possible audio bandwidth is 10kHz. With the restriction of 9kHz RF bandwidth in Australia, does that mean that the maximum audio bandwidth is only 4kHz?

    A: Designed audio bandwidth for the second generation AMX-2000 tuner exceeds 15kHz. However, Australia, east Asia, south Pacific, and other regions have 9kHz AM channel spacing, so the actual recovered audio bandwidth will be the limit of the station's transmission or 15kHz (whichever is less). Hopefully, this explanation does not further confuse or compound the issue.

I employed an old McKay Dymek DA-9 tuned antenna from the late 1980's. It's amplified, but I set the gain barely-above "on" - the absolute minimum (at 7 o'clock with little if any gain beyond what the foot-long attached ferrite bar would provide). The entire AM band was alive in a way I have not heard since I was a kid listening on a "decent" AM radio of that era. The first thing I noticed was the [audio] bandwidth -- BRAVO! Strong stations sounded like FM! The very-weakest stations could be tuned and be listenable. The combo of the DA-9 and your tuner yielded BETTER RECEPTION RESULTS than I get with my C. Crane Radio and long wire-fed ICOM R71! GREAT JOB... I have been listening to local 1580 WIFE, a station that was recently rebuilt with a new Broadcast Electronics digitally-modulated rig and a top-of-the-line Omnia box. This station demodulated by your AMX-2000 sounds BETTER than any standing Indianapolis and Cincinnati FM station. I had to grab a stiff drink when I heard the result (big smile). RECEPTION REPORT: Radio Disney on 1560 from NYC in eastern Indiana at 10PM (a "local" is on 1580) with NO PROBLEM... Such was barely-audible on my C. Crane Radio. You designed a good AM receiver!
