This meduci PRO1k tuner offers excellent quality control, and was designed entirely using specialized CAD software programs on the personal computer. Time marches forward, and the PRO1k tuner takes advantage of the most recent design improvements and advancements that modern technology can offer.
Each meduci PRO1k tuner is designed to be used by the avid audiophile in a personal radio collection. Each meduci tuner also makes an ideal receiver to demonstrate the high fidelity sound from your personal hobby AM Stereo transmitter. And each meduci tuner makes an accurate, reliable off-air AM broadcast station reference monitor. There are not any "short-cuts" taken to reduce design, production, and manufacturing costs. We pulled out the stops in our newest design incorporating digital frequency tuning read-out.
There is one air dielectric variable tuning capacitor within each PRO1k tuner, which is directly connected to the exterior rotary tuning control knob on the front panel. This is the only moving part inside your PRO1k AM stereo tuner! This spectacular capacitor is hand-crafted and individually manufactured in the United States of America (actually in Edgerton, Ohio). This capacitor is critical to make the PRO1k sound much better than many commercially-produced AM tuners and receivers. This capacitor and related circuitry are also largely responsible for the very low incidental carrier phase modulation present within every PRO1k tuner. This translates into very wide stereo separation, very low overall audio distortion, and low phase noise artifacts! Driving down the phase noise on the stereo subchannel dramatically improves the matrix stereo decoding process, and directly lowers the noise heard from the audio outputs.
Since every PRO1k tuner makes use of this hand-made variable tuning capacitor, all is well, correct? Not necessarily! Given that this is a manually-tuned analog receiver, tuning to any AM stereo station is more critical than using its digital-tuned brethren. This is due to something called 'microphonics' -- which causes the displayed carrier frequency to move only a few Hertz from center, when the tuner is touched or moved. Since this is a phase-detecting receiver, and the 25 Hertz stereo pilot identification tone is typically transmitted at very low 5% modulation level in the L-R channel, any physical movement of the tuner will upset stereo lock. As a result, the tuner needs to rest on a stable mounting surface.
Prior to releasing the first AMX2000 tuner in October 2005, we spent four years researching and developing (R&D) analog-tuned AM receivers. We found that deploying the air dielectric variable tuning capacitor provided the best sonic fidelity, with very low distortion present throughout the entire passband. However, the tuning capacitor was prone to microphonics. During our four-year R&D process, we developed design and manufacturing techniques that minimized the 'microphonic' effect, though the final design did not completely eliminate microphonics. Therefore, when tuned to any C-QuAM stereo station using your PRO1k tuner, it is normal for the AM stereo indicator to flutter on and off, if tuner is moved, or the tuning control knob is touched. However, after the PRO1k is tuned to the center frequency of the AM station, as verified by the digital display readout, the broadcast will be received in stereo (where available). Stereo lock will be maintained as long as the station continues their stereo broadcast, with adequate reception of this broadcast (until the tuning knob is touched again, or the PRO1k is moved).
Your purchase includes the following items to be shipped:
Front panel includes manual variable tuning control, A/B frequency band switch (if ordered), bright green digital frequency read-out, with integrated AM stereo pilot indication. Unit measures 5" width x 4" depth x 3" height, and weighs two pounds (includes footpads so as not to mar surfaces).
Rear panel includes individual left and right RCA "phono-style" audio output jacks, AM external antenna input RCA jack, power switch, and D.C +12-volt power supply input (for connection to class 2 wall-mounted power pack adapter).
Purchaser will supply their own external indoor tunable AM loop antenna/preselector. Remember that the radio's performance is only as good as the antenna system attached to it! This tuner is best suited for an external indoor tunable loop antenna (such as TERK Technologies Audiovox AM Advantage 1000 passive antenna, or PK's Loop Antennas). With each PRO1k purchase, we provide one black patch cord, so that you can quickly make the connection between the PRO1k tuner and the Terk AM Advantage Antenna! This six-foot long cable features 1/8" plug on one end and RCA plug on the other. This cable is shielded to preserve signal strength, while guarding against interference and hum pick-up.
Also, the left and right line level audio outputs are ready for connection to user-supplied stereo amplifier, stereo receiver, computer speakers, or self-powered amplified speakers. For international sales, purchaser furnishes one wall-mounted linear-mode power unit (power pack), that has +12-volt (500 milli-Ampere) D.C output and A.C input rating that matches country where power unit is to be used.

"The PRO1k tuner works great in my D.C area! Picked up New York and Boston quite clearly even at night when stations reduce power. Jeff gives good info on antennas to use with active ferrite loops, reducing interference from other directions. Connecting this tuner to my Yamaha preamp with Bass, Mid, and Treble, boost and cut, makes the AM sound much like FM. From further away too! AM stations that play music are now a real treat! AM is not just talk radio. Latino and country stations play music, and the PRO1k really shines on these. I love the digital frequency display. Between the station frequency and my tunable antenna frequency, I use the Internet to find the station frequency, then I only need to rock the antenna tuning to get a good peak. I also rotate the ferrite to focus on the station and reject all others at night. You really need a rotatable loop as a Spatial Filter because so-called Clear Channels exist now only on each side of the Mississippi. (My Bronx Cheer goes to the FCC for this!) With AM, still, you should remember to tell the family to set dimmers to full-on or full-off to avoid their buzzing interference. If you love AM, and are not happy with the AM section of your tuner or receiver, get the PRO1k. ... I'm glad I bought one." -- Tony Di, W4DIB, Potomac Falls, Virginia, USA
"Excellent communication and quick delivery to Australia. Great product too!" -- Marc M., Launceston, Tasmania, Australia
"I just purchased the hand-made meduci high fidelity AM Stereo tuner and set it up at home. It sounds great! All the receivable Portland AM's come in clearly with minimal static. Using the tunable Terk AM Advantage Antenna, 860 KPAM is received well with only minor splatter from 840 KKNX. Using the meduci wideband AM stereo tuner, I can easily tell which AM stations are broadcasting high quality audio in Eugene. Surprisingly, 1120 KPNW is one of the best sounding AM's in the market. 590 KUGN has some audible distortion, while 1120 KPNW sounds clean and crisp, much like FM. 1600 KOPB also sounds very good. This is the best sounding AM tuner I have ever heard! The high fidelity and sensitivity of this tuner make AM radio sound very good! Thank you for this wonderful product!" -- Aaron S., Eugene, Oregon, USA
"Just wanted to send a thank you for my meduci PRO1k AM Stereo Radio. Works great using the C. Crane Twin Coil Ferrite Antenna; better than the Terk AM Advantage Antenna. -- Graham Leslie M JP, Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia
"One word: FABULOUS. Even better than I had hoped for, the recommended [Terk] antenna is a great match for the tuner. All I need now are a few STEREO stations. Frequencies that were unlistenable are now clear and PLEASANT to hear. Near FM quality in my reception area. MANY thanks, again." -- Arnie C., Framingham, Massachusetts, USA
